Being intended for the professional world, this type of office automation tool must have a considerable number of functionalities to cover the needs of companies. Mastering this type of professional software will therefore require a rather heavy learning phase.
Many people, however, simply need an intuitive and easy-to-use word processor. This concept doesn't really exist in Windows. That's why I start on this page the creation of a new Word Processing project from AbiWord source code.
This fork of AbiWord 3.0 will aim to make it even simpler while increasing its ability to simply produce texts with sophisticated layouts.

The project is not collaborative, it is not a team that develops the project, but a single programmer. You can participate in the development by indicating on the forum the problems and bugs you encounter while using the software.
The first step of development is to successfully compile AbiWord 3.0 under Windows.
For some time the AbiWord project has not offered any more version for Windows. So it was necessary to fix a number of bugs specific to the Windows version to be able to compile the software and use its main functions.
The name "AbiWord" is a registered trademark, the creators of the project want the unofficial versions of Abiword to use the name "AbiWord Personal". The version number of AbiWord "Personal" corresponds to that of AbiWord "Official".
The AbiWord fork will of course have its own name, its own philosophy and an independent evolution of the AbiWord project. Nevertheless, if during its development I discover bugs or solutions to speed up the software, I will integrate the corrections in the "Personal" version of Abiword.

The AbiWord Personal 3.0 word processor is free and distributed under the GNU GPL v2.0 license, it supports the OpenDocument Text (.odt) file format widely used nowadays, but also the "Word" formats (doc and docx).

You can download a sample ".abw" file, AbiWord's proprietary format, to test its ability to display a long 260-page document. It is the book written by Mark Twain, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
